How to Change a GIF Loop Count

Published: 2026-07-10 · Reviewed by GIF Panel

Choose infinite playback, a fixed repeat count, or one play and understand why some apps ignore GIF loop metadata.

A GIF loop count is metadata that tells a compatible viewer how many times to repeat the animation. It does not add or remove frames, and it does not guarantee that every app will honor the instruction.

Change the loop count

  1. Open the GIF Loop Count Changer.
  2. Select an animated GIF.
  3. Choose infinite playback, one play, or a fixed repeat count.
  4. Export the file and test it in the actual destination.

Infinite, finite, and one-play GIFs

Infinite looping is the most compatible choice for reactions, stickers, and decorative animation. A finite loop can help demonstrations stop after a few repetitions. One-play animation is less predictable because viewers may restart it when the image is reopened, scrolled back into view, or re-rendered.

Why an app may ignore the setting

Browsers and apps can override GIF loop metadata. Some messaging platforms transcode uploads into video, while image previewers may always loop. Test the result in the final app rather than relying only on a desktop preview. If the destination converts GIF to video, consider using GIF to MP4 and controlling playback in the destination instead.

Loop count does not reduce file size

Changing metadata adds almost no meaningful size difference. For a smaller upload, use Trim GIF, resize dimensions, or follow the quality-preserving compression workflow.

Testing checklist

  • Watch the GIF in at least one browser and the target app.
  • Confirm whether the repeat count means total plays or repeats after the first play.
  • Keep the original file in case the destination rewrites metadata.
