How to Download GIFs from Slack (When “Save Image” Isn’t Available)

Published: 2026-04-17

Slack GIFs may be previews, app integrations, or private files. This guide shows what works, and what requires a public URL.

Slack is great for sharing GIF reactions, but downloading can be confusing. The key question is: is the GIF a public link, or a private Slack file?

If it’s a public link (GIPHY/Tenor/webpage)

  1. Copy the original URL (not just Slack’s preview).
  2. Use GIF Downloader for direct links/webpages.
  3. If it’s from GIPHY/Tenor, use GIPHY Downloader or Tenor GIF Downloader.

If it’s a private Slack file

Private workspace files require authentication, so a public downloader can’t fetch them directly. Use Slack’s built-in download button first, then manage the file locally.
